Here at CASA we recognize that many parents simply don’t know how to talk to their kids about tobacco, drugs and alcohol, or the best ways to protect them. In fact, we are often asked, “What should I be doing to help my kids?”  Finally, there is a great resource we can recommend for parents who need guidance and support.

CASA Founder and Chair, Joseph A. Califano Jr. has written a new book, How to Raise a Drug-Free Kid: The Straight Dope for Parents. This book is a valuable tool for parents and covers a wide variety of topics, from how to answer tough questions like “did you use drugs when you were my age?” to preparing children for college, and everything in between.

How to Raise a Drug Free Kid is based on nearly two decades of research from the National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse at Columbia University.

We urge you to read this book and share it with your colleagues, friends, and family. There are many ways you can help get this book in the hands of parents. Here are just a few ideas:

•          Ask your local newspaper to publish a review of the book

•          Organize a book party with a local bookseller so parents can easily purchase the book

•          Reach out to local funders and ask for their support to donate books to schools, community groups and faith-based organizations

•          Visit www.straightdopeforparents.org for more ideas and tools for spreading the word online

As you know, studies show that kids want parents engaged in their lives, and that parents are the most important influence on whether or not kids use tobacco, alcohol or drugs.  This book gives parents the tools to be effective in doing their job. How to Raise a Drug Free Kid: The Straight Dope for Parents is available now.  Click here to get your book today!  To sign up for e-news alerts from CASA, order a book, or find out how to book Joe Califano for a speaking engagement in your community, please visit How to Raise a Drug-Free Kid: The Straight Dope for Parents.
