Sullivan County Community Coalition
Let’s Change the Future Together!

Communities United for Substance Abuse Prevention

Welcome to the Communities United for Substance Abuse Prevention website... provided by the Sullivan County Coalition.  This is a body of community members from Sullivan County, Alstead, and Walpole dedicated to the prevention of substance abuse for our youth, and adults both young and old.  The goal of Communities United for Substance Abuse Prevention is to enhance, through prevention, the quality of life, success, and well being of our individuals and therefore fostering a better future for our community.  By identifying the issues and causes, and taking a look at the programs we have in place to prevent substance abuse, we can decide what prevention efforts need to be enhanced.  It has been shown that when efforts are put in the right direction, PREVENTION WORKS!

WHICH PROGRAMS, PRACTICES, AND POLICIES THE COMMUNITY WILL CHOOSE? Work together on things we are doing now that work? More enforcement?  Education?  Know and take advantage of training opportunities? (i.e.) Use $100,000 SPF funding?  Evidence Based Programs? Which grant opportunities will be available that fit our needs and that we should target?

-TOWN HALL MEETINGS Two town hall meetings were held on July 15th in Newport and July 22nd in Claremont.  It was a good exchange of information and awareness about community concerns and things that we can do.  Some of the results of recent Sullivan County youth risk surveys were provided and discussed (Eagle Times article).  Complete results are posted on the web in the local data section.

Focus Groups  1) Parent Focus Group and Youth Focus Groups throughout August and September

2) June 3rd, 2008 - Enforcement/judicial/corrections (results) 3) September 29th, 2008 - Medical/Health Care

Focus Group Sessions are a way for sectors of the commnity with common areas of focus to come together and share information, views, goals, and thoughts for action.  (examples of focus group questions) Those involved leave with an increased awareness and a broader perspective.  The result is an increased ability for the community to work together and to take a comprehensive approach to issues of concern.
